Meaningless EU Parliament Resolution Calls for Embargoing Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia
by Stephen Lendman
It’s the world’s largest arms buyer, Washington its largest supplier, Britain profiting hugely from lucrative sales. So do France, Germany and other EU nations.
They’re used for supporting regional terrorism and waging naked aggression on Yemen since March 2015, Obama’s genocidal war, planned and orchestrated in Washington.
European Free Alliance Greens supported the resolution - urging arms sales to Riyadh be embargoed as long as its war crimes continue, until they’re fully investigated.
Party spokesman Alyn Smith said “(t)he European Parliament's call for an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia is unprecedented and reflects growing frustration at the conduct of war in Yemen by the Saudi Air Force. Saudi Arabia is a top arms client of the UK and France, and there is evidence that these weapons have been used in gross violations of international law in Yemen, where thousands of civilians have been killed since the start of the war in March 2015.”
“The humanitarian situation in Yemen is getting worse, not better, and there is a clear need for greater scrutiny. There needs to be an independent inquiry that meets international law standards.”
“There are real grounds to believe that (US and) EU-made weapons systems are being exported to Saudi in breach of international and EU law.”
“Given the widespread and valid concerns over the conduct of the war by Saudi forces, the call for an EU-wide arms embargo is proportionate and necessary.”
“EU foreign policy (chief) Federica Mogherini must now heed this call and investigate how an arms embargo can be implemented.”
Chances for imposing an embargo are zero. US and European war profiteers won’t tolerate it, nor their governments.
Saudi ambassador to Brussels Abdulrahman al-Ahmed protested against the resolution, defended the indefensible, ludicrously blamed intervention on Iran.
He called US-orchestrated and supported genocidal slaughter a humanitarian initiative, undertaken partly to confront ISIS and other terrorist groups - ones Riyadh supports in Syria, Iraq and Libya, using its fighters as mercenaries in Yemen.
Nearly a year of fighting left the region’s poorest country devastated, over 80% of its population in desperate need of aid - too little forthcoming because Washington and Riyadh block it.
Famine stalks Yemen. Millions of lives are at risk from violence, starvation, lack of vital medical care, and overall deprivation.
The world community remains deplorably indifferent about a US-orchestrated holocaust. Little gets reported. Too few people outside the region have any idea what’s happening.
Millions may perish before conflict ends. Nothing is being done to prevent it.
Endless war without mercy continues. Obama bears full responsibility. Riyadh shares it, partnering in the highest of high crimes.
