Unwanted Refugees Face Nightmarish Conditions in Europe

Unwanted Refugees Face Nightmarish Conditions in Europe

by Stephen Lendman

Washington and its rogue allies bear full responsibility for the severest refugee crisis since WW II.

Thousands daily flee war-torn Syria and other nations, victimized by US-led aggression - unwanted in Europe after enduring hazardous journeys, leaving their homelands in a desperate effort to survive, treated with disdain, indifference and harshness on arrival.

The shocking image of a mother washing her newborn baby using muddied water on the Greek/Macedonian border highlights deplorable conditions getting worse with thousands of new arrivals daily.

Essentials to life are in short supply or unavailable. An estimated 70% of refugee children are sick, the major threat of spreading communicable diseases a largely ignored issue.

Doctors of the World nurse Sarah Collis commented on the nightmarish conditions in the Greek Idomeni refugee camp, saying:

“Conditions in the camp are truly horrendous. We have not had outbreaks of particular diseases yet, but young children are very vulnerable to pneumonia and dehydration from gastroenteritis. Pregnant women who might have complications might have issues getting medical help quick enough.”

Desperate people face closed borders. Parents laid their children on rail tracks along the Greece/Macedonian border, demanding it be reopened.

Camp conditions are squalid. Thousands endure freezing temperatures in thin tents. Essentials to life are in woefully short supply.

A humanitarian catastrophe is occurring in plain sight, EU leaders ignoring the fundamental rights of desperate people. Over a million arrived in Europe last year, thousands more daily, met with contempt, barbed wire fences and other barriers on arrival.

Brussels and Ankara agreed to turn Turkey into a refugee dumping ground, mistreatment and exploitation by the Erdogan regime notoriously horrendous.

In its 2015/2016 annual report, Amnesty International’s secretary general Salil Shetty said “(y)our rights are in jeopardy. They are being treated with utter contempt by many governments around the world.”

“Millions of people are suffering enormously at the hands of states and armed groups, while governments are shamelessly painting the protection of human rights as a threat to security, law and order or national ‘values.’ “

“Not only are our rights under threat, so are the laws and the system that protect them. More than 70 years of hard work and human progress lies at risk.”

Governments worldwide are undermining institutions established to protect humanity, fundamental rights brazenly violated.

The refugee crisis is a symptom of far graver issues. Tyranny in so-called Western “democracies” and endless imperial wars are the greatest threats of all.
