Actress Meryl Streep’s Disgraceful Golden Globes Speech
by Stephen Lendman
Annual Golden Globes awards presented by Hollywood’s Foreign Press Association honor excellence in films and television. On Sunday night, the 74th event was held.
Instead of accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award graciously, Streep disgracefully politicized it by bashing Trump without mentioning him by name.
Streep: “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick ’em all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
Fact: Streep ignored Obama’s anti-immigrant record, deporting greater numbers than any of his predecessors, called America’s deporter-in-chief for his actions.
Fact: Trump has no public record. He won’t succeed Obama until January 20. They’ll be plenty of time to judge him after the fact, not before he’s done anything.
Streep: “An actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people and let you feel what that feels like…There was one performance this year that stunned me.”
“It sank its hooks in my heart. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter - someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.”
“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. This instinct to humiliate, when it's modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence invites violence.”
“And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Trump didn’t mock disabled NYT reporter Serge Kovaleski. He’s justifiably critical of America’s fourth estate for outrageously bashing him relentlessly.
Hand gestures he uses are part of his way of communicating. He pokes fun at lots of people. So do many others in Washington - notably Obama and Hillary.
Streep: “We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage. That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution.”
“So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the committee to protect journalists. Because we’re going to need them going forward. And they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”
What Streep called “the principled press” I call media scoundrels, presstitutes, featuring fake news, not what journalism is supposed to be - available only from reliable truth-telling alternative sources she didn’t mention.
She may be a talented actress. Her politics leaves much to be desired. She’s a Democrat party supporter, silent about Obama’s war on humanity, his corporate favoritism, his abysmal human rights record, his contempt for democratic values and rule of law principles, his police state rule.
Streep supported war goddess, racketeer, perjurer Hillary’s presidential ambitions. At the Democrat National Convention, she blustered:
“Nearly 100 years after women got the vote, you people have made history. And you’re going to make history again in November because Hillary Clinton will be our first woman president, and she will be a great president.”
“And she will be the first in a long line of women, and men, who serve with grit and grace. She’ll be the first, but she won’t be the last.”
Fact: Dead wrong on all counts. Indeed women one day will serve as US president - hopefully no one like Hillary.
Last June, during a New York Public Theater benefit, Streep mocked Trump in attire, makeup, and gestures resembling him. Her performance was acting at its worst, not best, a Hillary-supporting stunt.
Freely expressing views are a First Amendment right, politicized entertainment another matter entirely.
