Abbas to Accept Another Palestinian Versailles?

Abbas to Accept Another Palestinian Versailles?

by Stephen Lendman

Oslo and subsequent agreements represented capitulation to Israeli demands, Palestinians getting nothing in return.

PA security forces enforce occupation harshness, terrorizing their own people, conditions today worse than pre-Oslo.

Abbas is a despicable traitor. In 1993, he was part of the Palestinian negotiating team capitulating to Israel in Oslo. Does he have another Versailles in mind, a scheme to call further betrayal peace?

On May 12, the Jerusalem Post headlined “ ‘Abbas has decided to sign peace deal with Israel,’ “ saying:

He “crossed the Rubicon and voiced ‘unprecedented’ readiness to reach a peace deal with Israel,” according to unnamed sources pushing for resumed talks.

He “made this clear to President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House last week.”

“The president plans to use his trip to Israel later this month to receive assurances from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he, too, is committed to a peace agreement.”

He rejects Palestinian self-determination, earlier called peace talks a “waste of time,” wants continued occupation harshness, subjugation of millions of Palestinians, agreeable to nothing except their virtual unconditional surrender to his demands.

Israel selected Abbas for Palestinian leadership, in office illegitimately for 12 years, his 2005 election rigged to assure it.

He collaborates with Israel against his own people, why he’s widely despised. Selling out another time won’t surprise. Reports suggest he softened his earlier demands in talks with Trump in Washington - for what in return for himself isn’t known, likely a promise of something.

He’s not “flexible,” as the Jerusalem Post suggested. He’s self-serving, hugely corrupt, reportedly super-rich from wealth gained the old-fashioned way by stealing it.

He told Trump, he’ll resume peace talks without preconditions. PA members close to him said he’s agreeable to land swaps, abandoning conflict resolution within June 1967 borders if true, assuring Israel retains all valued Judea and Samaria land, Palestinians remaining isolated in bantustans on worthless scrubland.

Speaking in Washington days earlier, PLO executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi called the Israeli lobby a major influence with congressional members on everything related to the country.

It owns the so-called peace process, she said. Even though different views are represented, extremist ones have greatest impact, AIPAC most influential of all, along with super-wealthy US Jews, notable Israeli apologists, the media, and spin doctors, among other dark elements, shaping public perceptions.

“A distorted pattern…totally weigh(s) in favor of the occupation,” assuring so-called peace talks when ongoing serve Israeli interests, Palestinian ones ignored, Ashwari explained.

Israel’s idea of conflict resolution is unlimited settlement construction, total militarized control over borders, airspace, territorial waters, and resources, the PA acting as an obedient security subcontractor, rejecting Palestinian sovereign independence except over isolated worthless cantons.

Israel wants endless occupation. Ashwari calls it “enslavement,” an entire nation oppressed under militarized control, stealing land, ethnically cleansing it, demolishing homes, extrajudicially killing Palestinians, incarcerating thousands in cages, acting entirely with impunity, fully supported by Washington and other Western countries.

Conflict resolution if achieved will worsen things, not improve them - Israel able to say mutual agreement was reached, making it easier for its boot to stomp brutally on Palestinians, free from outside interference and criticism.

They’re on their own. PA leadership won’t help. Grassroots activism is the only way. Dead-on-arrival peace talks never worked before and won’t now.
