Fake Video Alleges Marwan Barghouti Stopped Hunger Striking

Fake Video Alleges Marwan Barghouti Stopped Hunger Striking

by Stephen Lendman

Now in its 22nd day, hundreds of Palestinian political prisoners are hunger striking for justice denied them, viciousness substituting.

Israel’s Prison Service released fake video footage alleging to show hunger strike leader/national Palestinian hero Barghouti eating cookies and a candy bar in his cell.

According to Haaretz, Prison Service sources confirmed he was set up. The footage with no timestamp didn’t show his face clearly.

Aired on Israeli TV, notorious Islamophobe public security minister Gilad Erdan lied, claiming hunger striking isn’t about prison conditions, “only about Barghouti’s desire to bolster his status in preparation for the day after Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas),” adding:

“Barghouti is cynically exploiting the terrorists for a hunger strike for which they are paying and will pay a heavy price, while he himself can’t restrain his own appetites.”

The Committee for the Freedom and Dignity Strike said footage Israel released dates from around 2004. It’s unrelated to ongoing hunger striking.

The Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs called the video an Israeli “war of lies” to discredit Barghouti and other courageous hunger strikers.

Barghouti’s lawyer Elias Sabbagh responded to the footage, saying “(t)his was expected as part of the psychological and media war the Israel Prison Service is conducting against the prisoners.”

“We can’t address the content of the clip so long as they don’t let us meet with Marwan. Let us visit him and then we will check the claims with him.”

During a Sunday evening news conference, Barghouti’s wife, Fadwa, denounced Israeli “fabrications,” saying it shows the “occupation’s decline,” adding it won’t deter the resolve of hunger strikers to continue struggling for justice.

On Monday, the International Middle East Media Center published a snapshot of occupation harshness, repeated daily in the Territories - communities raided, homes ransacked, belongings damaged or stolen, defenseless Palestinians terrorized, men, women and children abducted.

Here are three headlined Monday reports:

“Israeli Soldiers Abduct Four Palestinians in Tulkarem”

“Israeli Soldiers Abduct Five Palestinians in Jerusalem”

“Israeli police kill 16-year old Palestinian girl in Jerusalem” - Eyewitnesses refuted the claim that she attempted to stab a security officer. She was at least 10 meters away from the nearest one, they said. Multiple gunshots murdered her in cold blood.

Over the weekend, the IMEMC published stories about Palestinians abducted in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, and Doura, nine Palestinians injured near Nablus, along with tanks, armored vehicles and bulldozers invading Gaza.

Most abducted Palestinians are imprisoned, following grueling interrogations, often amounting to torture, despite having committed no crimes.
