NYT Op-Ed Opposes De-Escalation in Syria

NYT Op-Ed Opposes De-Escalation in Syria

by Stephen Lendman

The Times and its contributors support imperial lawlessness - endless wars for transforming all sovereign independent states into US vassal ones, no matter the human cost.

A May 12 Times op-ed headlined “Trump Should Be Wary of Putin’s Syria Plan,” saying:

He’s not “leading…(He’s) following in Moscow’s wake. Mr. Putin’s plan of de-escalation, if accepted, would enhance Iran’s regional role and consolidate the regime of Bashar al-Assad of Syria, the very outcomes administration spokesmen have said they were trying to avoid.”

Fact: Syria was invaded by US-recruited, armed, funded, trained, and directed terrorists. Trump escalated Obama’s aggression.

Fact: Russia and Iran respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They’re committed for conflict resolution - polar opposite Washington’s agenda, supported by its rogue allies, including media scoundrels like The Times.

The Times: “…Trump’s headline-grabbing cruise missile strike won him praise for decisiveness.”

Fact: His unjustifiable attack was preemptive naked aggression, a Nuremberg-level war crime.

The Times: “The president’s advisers need to persuade him that a mania for quick results is a first step toward failure.”

The op-ed urges greater aggression against a sovereign state threatening no one. It perpetuates the long ago discredited canard about “Russian aggression” in Ukraine. None exists now or earlier.

The contributor urges tougher Trump policies instead of rapprochement with Russia in the interest of world peace.

The Times: “The deal Mr. Putin seeks in Syria would empower America’s adversaries far more than America’s friends. The president would be better off without it.”

Instead of supporting peace over endless wars, cooperation with other nations over confrontation, along with conflict resolution in Syria and other US war theaters, The Times op-ed supports America’s imperial agenda, the root cause of world turmoil.
