iPhone XR Review - Januari 2022

The iPhone X , which we met last year , was paving the way for the future of smartphones , as Apple put it. While Apple went that route with its high-end iPhone Xsand Xs Max models, it also offered a brand new option like the iPhone XR for those who want to experience the iPhone experience at a slightly more affordable price, but with a brand new device. The iPhone XR, which went on sale in our country on November 30, on the same date as the other 2018 model iPhones, is offered with features such as a 6.1-inch screen, aluminum body, Face ID and A12 Bionic processor. We have been experiencing the 256 GB white color version of the iPhone XR, which appeals to different tastes with its various color options, for a while. In the iPhone XR review article, you will find our impressions and curiosity about the smartphone.

iPhone XR review: Design

Preferring the combination of stainless steel and glass in the iPhone X and the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, which follow its footsteps, Apple prefers aluminum, which is one of the basic materials used in iPhones for a long time, in the iPhone XR. Honestly, it wouldn't be wrong to say that the iPhone XR is a combination of last year's iPhone X and iPhone 8 models. The front and outlines of the iPhone X are taken, while the sides and back are borrowed from the iPhone 8. At first glance, it is striking that the corners are as curved as on the iPhone X and the screen adapts to it.

The resulting overall appearance may not be as highly elegant and attractive as on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. However, the iPhone XR also carries the air of a flagship smartphone. The aluminum surrounding the edges is, in Apple's terms, a special aerospace-grade alloy. At the same time, the anodized aluminum surface appears in different tones in different color options. It is stated that the strength of the glass surrounding the front and back is higher than that of the iPhone X. Indeed, during the one-month period we used, we did not encounter any scratches on either the glass or aluminum surface of the iPhone XR, even though it was without a case. Of course, we have to give a footnote that we act very carefully during use.

The iPhone XR is also water and dust resistant. However, it has IP67 certification, not IP68 like the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. In other words, it can stay in water at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. However, nothing will happen to your phone in case of spills, heavy water dripping on the phone while talking or using in heavy rain, etc.

Years ago, Apple offered vibrant color options, apart from the colors we are used to with the iPhone 5c model. However, the body of that phone was mostly plastic. Now we see that the same tones of color options are offered with the iPhone XR. In addition to the black, white and even red that we are used to, Apple; It also offers fun colors such as blue, coral and yellow to users. The last three colors in particular will allow you to publicly show that you truly own an iPhone XR. The colored glass surface covering the back in each color is accompanied by an anodized aluminum surface in close tones.

The front of the iPhone XR is covered by a 6.1-inch screen. At the top of the screen is the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera system and the handset speaker. The area of the surrounding bezel is slightly larger than on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Despite this, we are in front of us with a phone that takes up less space and is comfortable to use compared to the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. The body thickness is 8.3 millimeters, which is slightly more than the other iPhones of this year and last year. However, it has no noticeable effect, neither in appearance nor in use.

If we didn't see the front and back of the phone, just looking at the edges, we would think it was an iPhone 8 Plus. Of course, there is something taken from the iPhone X around the edges. For example, on the right edge we see a large power button. This key is used to turn on the device, wake it up and call Siri. Again on this edge, the nano-SIM card tray is placed downwards. On the left side are the mute and volume keys. On the bottom edge, we see the Lightning port and the grids on both sides of it. The one to the right of these grilles houses the speaker. The second speaker is on the front, inside the handset speaker. Two of the internal microphones are located on this lower edge. The top edge is kept clean. Let's also mention that there are antenna lines on the right and left sides, on the upper and lower parts. These match the color of the back of each model.

The glass-covered back surface makes it possible to use the wireless charging feature, as in other iPhone models. Unlike the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, we see a single rear camera on the back of the iPhone XR, just like last year's iPhone 8. Below that is an additional microphone and a four-color True Tone flash. The Apple logo and iPhone lettering are other remarkable elements we see on the back.

iPhone XR review: Hardware and Performance

The iPhone XR's screen measures 6.1 inches from corner to corner. The screen resolution is 1792 x 828 pixels, which is lower than the screen resolution of both the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, and the iPhone 8 Plus. However, with a pixel density of 326 ppi, it meets Apple's Retina display requirement for its smartphones from the very beginning.

Apple calls this display Liquid Retina. The biggest reason for this is the curvature at the corners and the special processes applied here to achieve the same look as in the middle. Apple states that it is possible for the screen to follow the curved lines of the device's corners, thanks to advanced pixel masking, sub-pixel anti-aliasing, and highly-accurate processed glass. In fact, the same processes are applied to the iPad Pro 's Liquid Retina display with curved corners.

However, on the iPhone XR, it is important to keep the surface area of the device as small as possible and expand the screen area as much as possible. Moreover, the screen of the iPhone XR is not OLED like the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, but has LCD technology. For this reason, the operations on the screens of other 2018 model iPhones cannot be applied exactly. Apple has developed a new backlight design, allowing the screen to extend into the corners. In this way, it achieves the largest LCD screen ever offered on an iPhone.

When you compare the iPhone XR with the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, the bezel surrounding the screen is a little thicker. However, this does not bother the eye that much. Trying to extend the LCD screen to the limits of the device as much as possible, Apple, in addition to using a different method, also gives up 3D Touch, a feature we have seen frequently in iPhones in recent years.

3D Touch was first introduced with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The screen with this feature can detect different pressure levels. In this way, it is possible to perform different functions when you press your finger lightly or firmly on the screen. It has been discussed for a long time how useful 3D Touch is, but we have been making use of this feature on all iPhones we have used so far.

Due to the lack of 3D Touch, the Quick Action menu does not open when you lightly press the application icons on the home screen of the iPhone XR. Instead, the interface that allows applications to be removed or relocated appears. On the other hand, there is no Peek, which lets you preview links in Safari or Mail, or Pop, which lets you open them completely.

We said that we benefit a lot from 3D Touch, but as a matter of fact, Apple indirectly offers many of the popular features of 3D Touch to iPhone XR users. For example, when you lightly press the Flashlight icon on the locked screen, you feel a slight vibration, just like on the 3D Touch screen, and the flashlight turns on. Or you can access more controls in Control Center with a light press of each control's button. One of the most popular possibilities of 3D Touch, you can move the cursor by pressing the virtual keyboard lightly. All in all, the absence of 3D Touch on the iPhone XR is not a huge loss.

The iPhone XR's LCD screen also has True Tone technology. If you keep this technology on, the white color level of the screen is adjusted according to the color temperature of the beam in the environment. This way, your eyes are more comfortable, especially when reading something on the phone. On the other hand, the screen has a brightness of over 600 nits and supports DCI-P3 color range. The contrast ratio is 1400:1, lower than that of the iPhone Xs and Xs Max's display.

Still, the sharpness of the screen, the vividness of the colors and the details are advanced. At the same time, the depth of black color is high. When the screen is off, distinguishing the top notch area from the screen is just as difficult as on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Moreover , you can watch Dolby Vision supported content from Netflix or iTunes Store brightly and vividly on the iPhone XR's screen. Indeed, the Dolby Vision-supported content we watch on Netflix and rent from the iTunes Store is as impressive as the iPhone Xs Max .

When we compare the OLED screen of the iPhone Xs Max, we see that the screen of the iPhone XR remains at the lower level. This is proven both on paper and in practice. When we look closely at the screen of both phones; The sharpness of the text on the iPhone XR appears to be higher than on the iPhone Xs Max. In addition, the colors appear more vivid on the iPhone Xs Max's screen. However, if we leave the iPhone Xs Max aside and compare the iPhone XR with other products in the same segment, we see that the quality and experience offered by the screen is at the top level. All in all, iPhone XR owners will be quite pleased with the display.

The power on the audio side complements the superior qualities offered by the screen and turns the iPhone XR into a useful device for multimedia enthusiasts. Apple is also rolling out the advancements in the iPhone Xs and Xs Max's stereo speakers on the iPhone XR. The stereo speakers, located on one bottom edge and the other on the front, in the handset speaker, deliver a powerful, balanced sound in terms of bass and treble. Apple has increased the volume of the speaker in the handset speaker compared to the previous generation models. In this way, equal volume of sound is projected to both ears, especially when you hold the phone horizontally. The sound output is one step lower than that of the iPhone Xs Max, but above the smartphone average. As a result, you don't feel the need for an external speaker while listening to music or watching something by yourself or with others.

It has become a classic of iPhones, 3.5 mm in iPhone XR. There is no headphone jack. EarPods with Lightning tips come out of the box. Plus it's 3.5mm. – No Lightning adapter either. Headphones out of the box will do the trick, but you have two ways to experiment with different headphones. You should either buy the Lightning – 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter accessory, which Apple sells for 69 TL, or you should evaluate the Bluetooth headset options.

In the iPhone XR, we see the Apple-designed A12 Bionic processor, as in the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Based on the 7 nm architecture, this processor comes with six CPU cores. Two of them are for high-performance work, and the other four are cores for day-to-day work, prioritizing power savings. Apple says CPU performance has improved by up to 15 percent over the A11 Bionic chip. On the GPU side, we see a quad-core graphics processor unit. According to Apple, it offers a performance increase of up to 50 percent. This results in better performance in games, video editing applications or visually demanding tasks.

The processor and graphics performance tests we conducted in GeekBench 4 show that the performance of the iPhone XR is ahead of last year's models. CPU benchmark test results are slightly ahead of last year's phones, in line with what Apple has stated. In the Compute benchmark test, which measures graphics processor performance, the difference with the results of the iPhone X is 30 percent. Compared to the iPhone Xs Max, it is between 5 and 10 percent lower.

As a result, the iPhone XR performs better than last year's iPhones, and this is proven by tests. Although it is slightly below the iPhone Xs Max in the results, we have to underline that the performance difference between the two phones in daily life is not noticeable.

Although Apple has not officially announced, we know that the iPhone XR has 3 GB of RAM. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max come with 4GB of RAM. iOS handles memory management very well. Therefore, it is very difficult to feel the difference. If you own both phones, you may find that the iPhone Xs Max buffers and launches more apps when you open and want to restart apps that you left in the background on both phones a long time ago. What we mean is, for iPhone XR owners, the presence of 3GB of RAM doesn't make any noticeable difference.

When we look at the storage options, we see that the iPhone XR offers 64, 128 and 256 GB capacity options. We haven't seen Apple offer 128GB of space for a while. It's nice to place an option between 64GB and 256GB. In fact, 64GB of space should be enough for most users, thanks to the presence of iCloud and other cloud storage services. However, by paying a little more money and choosing 128 GB, you can open up more space for the photos, videos or movies or series you will upload.

One of the areas where iPhone XR lags behind iPhone Xs and Xs Max is 4.5G support. iPhone Xs and Xs Max support download speeds exceeding 1 gigabit thanks to Category 16 LTE support. The iPhone XR has Category 12 LTE support. This provides support for download speeds of 600 Mbit, but is potentially lower than on the Xs and Xs Max. As a matter of fact, mobile internet connection experiences will be no different right now, as existing 4.5G networks are unable to reach such high speeds. However, in the future, when the capacities of mobile networks expand with the updating of the technologies used, the iPhone XR's destination seems a little more limited. Regardless, this difference will not be of great importance in the purchasing decisions of the users.

When we look at the battery side, we see that the iPhone XR has a higher capacity battery with 2942 mAh than both last year's iPhones and this year's iPhone Xs Max model. According to Apple, this phone offers 1.5 hours longer operating life than the iPhone 8 Plus. On the other hand, up to 25 hours of phone calls, up to 15 hours of internet surfing, up to 16 hours of video watching, up to 65 hours of music listening are also available.

We see that the iPhone XR offers a working life of more than 24 hours under normal intensive use. Moreover, during this use, the screen brightness is mostly above the medium level. In other words, the iPhone XR allows you to easily take a day off from morning to evening with a fully charged battery, and even find the morning of the next day. This phone also has fast charging support. However, Apple places the 5W standard charging adapter in the phone's box, and there is no fast charging facility with it. With this adapter, it can take 2.5-3 hours to reach full load.

To take advantage of fast charging support, you need an 18W or 30W USB-C power adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable, which Apple sells separately. We have a 29W USB-C power adapter that we bought last year. In the test we carried out with this, we saw that the battery of the iPhone XR reached 50 percent in 28 minutes, and came to full charge in 1 hour and 40 minutes. In addition to fast charging, wireless charging support is also available. Wireless charging is also slow compared to charging with a 5W adapter, but it is more advanced in terms of practicality. The Qi wireless charging standard is supported by the iPhone XR and is a common standard. You can take advantage of this opportunity with most wireless charging accessories you can buy in the market. But be careful to choose what Apple recommends.

Apple is spreading Face ID, which was only available on the iPhone X last year, to the entire iPhone series this year, leaving Touch ID completely. We also see the TrueDepth depth-sensing camera system on the iPhone XR, which we saw on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. In this way, you can unlock your device without entering a password, just by looking at the phone. Face ID works pretty fast on iPhone XR. So much so that we see that it captures the same speed as Face ID on the iPhone Xs Max.

iPhone XR review: Software

iPhone XR comes with iOS 12 installed. With iOS 12, Apple is focusing on performance and making it possible for even older models to run fast and fluidly. On a high-end phone like the iPhone XR, iOS 12 works very fluently and quickly.

With iOS 12, Screen Time brings many innovations such as Group FaceTime, Messages and useful improvements in FaceTime applications such as Camera Effects, Do Not Disturb and Notifications. iPhone XR owners have the opportunity to take advantage of all these opportunities.

The 6.1 screen of the iPhone XR offers enough viewing area that Apple; In applications such as Settings, Mail, Messages, it adjusts the screen according to this direction in horizontal use. It does the same on the iPhone Xs Max and earlier “Plus” models.

The App Store for iPhone XR has a large library of apps and games. For this reason, phone owners will not have any problems with the applications and games they will install. The power of the Apple A12 Bionic processor will also give the opportunity to use augmented reality-based applications and games, which Apple attaches more and more importance to, efficiently. On the other hand, the application called Measurement and offered to all iPhones with iOS 12 will also allow you to use your iPhone XR as a ruler or meter when you need it.
